PHILADELPHIA - The Boston Bruins are trying to determine whether 18-year-old rookie David Pastrnak has the physicality to remain on their roster. Now, they know he can score.Pastrnak scored his first two career NHL goals to lead the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. He skates well and puts teams on their heels with his speed, Boston coach Claude Julien said. Right now, its just, Is he strong enough? And does he have the durability to do that on a nightly basis in this league at the age of 18. Were evaluating him as each game goes on.Chris Kelly added a short-handed goal for Boston, which won its third straight.I thought we played well enough that we deserved to win today, Julien said.Claude Giroux scored for Philadelphia, which fell further out of the Eastern Conference playoff race. Jakub Voracek, who entered leading the NHL with 49 points, assisted Girouxs goal.Coach Craig Berube remained positive afterward. We did a lot of good things today and if we play like that well win a lot of games, he said. The Flyers lost goaltender Steve Mason to injury as he left 7:07 into the opening period with a lower body injury. Mason went down and appeared to clutch the back of his right knee after extending his right leg to save Craig Cunninghams shot.Mason, who was replaced by Ray Emery, has been battling an injury all week. He had an MRI on Monday and was questionable with a lower body injury for Tuesdays game against Ottawa but played in Tuesdays 2-1 shootout victory and again was in net in Thursdays 3-2 overtime victory over Washington.Berube didnt provide an update afterward as to the extent of time Mason might miss.Boston quickly took advantage of Masons absence when Pastrnak scored with 8:37 left in the first period. Zdeno Chara passed from behind the net to Torey Krug. Krugs shot from the left circle bounced off Emery to Pastrnak, who flipped it past Emery. It was the first career goal for Pastrnak, the youngest active NHL player who was appearing in his seventh game and second since being recalled from AHL Providence on Tuesday.(Krug) had a great shot and I got the rebound and just tried to hit the puck, Pastrnak said. It feels great. The tally ended a six-game road drought on the power play for the Bruins, who had been 0 for 14 on the man advantage in their previous six road games while extending Philadelphias struggles on the penalty kill. The Flyers entered the day last in the league by killing off 74.8 per cent of opponents power plays.Boston went up 3-0 with two goals in the third period.Pastrnak netted his second of the game 4:58 into the period. Pastrnak skated across the blue line, passed to David Krejci and then found an opening to the right of Emery. Krejci whipped a cross-ice pass to a wide-open Krejci, who one-timed it into the empty net as Emery was slow to move laterally.I just moved to where my skates go and he found me, Pastrnak said. It wasnt hard to score. It was the third career point for Pastrnak, who had an assist on Dec. 1 at Anaheim.Kelly took Loui Erikssons pass and beat Emery with a wrist shot on the glove side on a 2-on-1 short-handed break with 10:09 left.Giroux fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle past Tuukka Rasks stick side with 5:47 remaining. It was too little too late for Philadelphia. We played hard and I thought the guys stayed with it all game, Berube said. Its disappointing for sure but we have to stay positive.Notes: Six-year-old Flyers fan Kohlsen Fisher met Giroux after the game. "Our soccer team is absolutely in complete disarray," said Leiweke, drawing laughs during an Empire Club luncheon speech about the future of MLSE teams and plans to improve them.CLEVELAND -- Another qualified coaching candidate has eluded the Browns. Ken Whisenhunts decision to accept Tennessees opening leaves Cleveland as one of just three NFL franchises still searching for a head coach. Whisenhunt, who guided Arizona to a Super Bowl, came close to being hired by the Browns last year and interviewed with the team on Saturday. San Diegos loss on Sunday in the AFC playoffs freed up teams to make offers to Whisenhunt and he chose the Titans after it appeared he was headed to Detroit. Its not known if the Browns tried to outbid the Titans for the well-regarded 51-year-old. With Whisenhunt no longer in the mix, the Browns moved into the third week of their quest to replace Rob Chudzinski without any clear front-runner, but with a new former NFL head coach on their list. The team has interviewed at least five known candidates and the Browns reportedly met Monday with former Titans coach Mike Munchak, also in consideration with the Lions. The 53-year-old Munchak, a Hall of Fame lineman, went 22-26 in three seasons with the Titans, who fired him on Jan. 4, ending his 30-plus-years association with the franchise. Clevelands degree of interest in Munchak isnt known since the team is not commenting on any interviews and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner have maintained a low profile since dumping Chudzinski after one season. And while there may not be a current favourite to take over as Clevelands seventh full-time coach since 1999, there are signs that Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase could be the Browns top choice. The 35-year-old Gase was the first candidate contacted by the Browns, but he informed them -- along with the Minnesota Vikings -- that he wanted to wait until after the playoffs to be considered. "I told both teams that were interested in me that I appreciated it and I was going to wait until after our season had concluded," Gase said on Jan. 3. "They were great about it. They said they appreciated me being up front and honest about it, and I thought that was the best decision for wwhat we are trying to accomplish with our team.dddddddddddd." Its not known if Gase has agreed to an interview with either team. NFL rules prohibit teams from offering jobs to assistant coaches who are still in the playoffs. Gases decision to delay any interviews raised some flags about whether hes actually ready to be a head coach. But as long as hes paired with quarterback Peyton Manning, Gases profile will continue to grow and hell undoubtedly be coveted if he waits another year. Following Denvers win on Sunday over San Diego, Manning praised Gase during his postgame news conference for his play calling in helping the Broncos advance to Sundays AFC Championship against New England. In his first season as Denvers offensive co-ordinator, the Broncos scored an NFL record 606 points and led the league with 457.3 yards per game and 340.3 yards passing. His resume is impressive, but even if the Browns meet with Gase, its not a given he will be hired. Hes never been a head coach, and Haslam and Banner said they were determined to find a "strong winner who knows how to win football games" as they began looking for their second coach in just over a year. If the Browns chose to wait on Gase, they run the risk of the coaching talent pool drying up and being in a desperate situation should he turn them down. Cleveland has waited until after the Super Bowl before. Following the 2004 season, the Browns hired Romeo Crennel in the hours after the Super Bowl. The Browns are already losing a public relations war as the search has dragged on. After New England offensive co-ordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew his name from consideration for Clevelands opening last week, it heightened the perception that Cleveland is not an attractive job. It hasnt helped that some national reports have described the Browns situation as "toxic" and "radioactive." Haslam and Banner have also interviewed Seattle defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, Arizona defensive co-ordinator Todd Bowles and Green Bay quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo. Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was on the ice for a third straight day on Wednesday. Price, who was in full equipment for the second day in a row, worked on lateral pushes in both directions and butterfly drops over his 30 minutes of ice-time. He continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury that he suffered in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New York Rangers. After Price skated on Tuesday, Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien reiterated that Price will not return to action any time soon. "Thats just part of the process of making a comeback," said Therrien. "Hes not going to play in that series (against New York). Hes not going to play." SAN JOSE, Calif. - Mark Letestu made sure the Columbus Blue Jackets party would carry on, redirecting a shot into the net about a minute after Ryan Johansen had a potential winning goal waved off.The visiting Blue Jackets rallied from behind twice and beat the road-weary San Jose Sharks 5-4 on Thursday night, with Letestus goal coming with 21 seconds remaining. We made a great play to get the puck to the point, and I was along the side of the net and got the redirect, Letestu said. Its a great victory now but we can spoil it in 24 hours.Columbus will play the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday night.Johansen scored twice and Nick Folignos power-play goal with just under nine minutes to play tied it for the Blue Jackets, who were playing for the first time since losing at Ottawa on Saturday.James Wisniewskis shot bounced off Antti Niemis pads, and Scott Hartnell kicked it over to Foligno, who had the open shot. That was a great play by Hartsie, Foligno said. He used his soccer skills to kick over to me.Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 33 shots for his 99th NHL win, and the Blue Jackets improved to 4-1-1 in their last six games against the Sharks. This is always a hard rink to play in, Foligno said. We got a broken play, and when you shoot the puck on goal, anything can happen.Foligno was called for goalie interference on Johansens negated goal, though replays showed he seemed to be clear of the play. When I came in to look at it, I was seeing something completely different, Columbus coach Todd Richards said. Our guy was off to the side.Niemi stopped 23 shots for the Sharks, who lost their third straight after just completing an East Coast swing in which they played five games in eight days. They were able to spend some time in our zone, and they were getting pucks to the net, Niemi said. We need to make the simple plays, get the puck out of our zone.Joe Pavelski had two goals, and Logan Couture and Adam Burish also scored for the Sharks. We made too many mistakes that ended up in the back of our net, Couture said. Weve had some spurts but the mistakes we made weve gone over for years. Theyre mental mistakes we need to fix.Couture intercepted a pass from Columbus defender Cody Goloubef right in front of the net and easily beat Bobrovsky to give the Sharks a 4-3 edge with 11:37 remaining.Pavelski scored his second of the game less than two minutes into the third period, tying it 3-3. He found a seam from the left side of the crease after taking a pass from Joe Thornton.Burish scored his first of the season, firing a shot past Bobrovsky from the right circle about five minutes into the first period. Pavelski redirected a shot by Couture for a power-play goal late in the first to make it 2-0.Johansen opened the second-period flurry with a backhander over Niemis right shoulder.Less than four minutes later, Letestu scored a short-handed goal off a nice pass from Artem Anismov.Johansen scored an unassisted goal 83 seconds later after Hartnell knocked the puck loose in the Sharks zone.NOTES: Columbus gave up its first power-play goal of the season, leaving the Detroit Red Wings as the only team with a spotless penalty-killing unit. ... WASHINGTON -- Doug Fister pitched eight shutout innings, and Anthony Rendon had three hits and two RBI for the Washington Nationals, who beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 victory on Saturday night. Washington took a half-game lead over Atlanta in the NL East after dropping the first two games in the series. Ryan Zimmerman also drove in a run for the Nationals. Coming off his second loss of the season, Fister (6-2) allowed five hits -- three over his final seven innings -- with three strikeouts and one walk. Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 16th save. Rendons RBI single in the third gave Washington its first lead of the series and his run-scoring double in the seventh made it 3-0. Braves starter Julio Teheran (6-5) struck out a season-high 10 batters. He allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings. Atlanta had won five straight against the Nationals, seven of eight this season, and was 20-7 since the start of the 2013 campaign. Braves catcher Evan Gattis extended his major-league leading hitting streak to 20 games with a sixth-inning single. Fister and Teheran lived up to the hype and locked up in a pitchers duel. Fister, who has won six of seven starts, has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of nine starts this season. Atlanta had back-to-back one-out singles in the first inning, but Fister fought back. He got out of the jam and started a streak of nine straight batters retired. He didnt allow another hit until the fifth inning in front of a sellout crowd. Teheran, who frequently stepped off the mound during his outing, struck out the side in the fifth inning. After walking Adam LaRoche in the sixth, and with a 1-0 count on Zimmerman, Teheran again shuffled around on the mound, and was called for a balk. Two pitches later, Zimmermans single drove home LaRoche. NOTES: Justin Upton went 0 for 3 in his return to Atlantas starting lineup. WASHINGTON -- The Charlotte Bobcats have leapfrogged another team, increasing the odds that their return to the playoffs wont be a token appearance. The Washington Wizards have dropped a spot and are having issues. Or, as centre Marcin Gortat put it: "The way we play right now, we aint going to beat anybody, including Milwaukee." The Bobcats blew a 20-point, first-half lead to the Wizards on Wednesday night before winning 94-88 in overtime, moving Charlotte into position for the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference. "To go from basically the worst team going to the six seed, I mean, it shows a lot," said guard Kemba Walker, who scored the only field goal in overtime for either team. The win left both teams at 40-38 with four games remaining, but Charlotte won the season series 3-1 and therefore holds the tiebreaker. Both teams want to stay out of seventh or eighth to avoid a first-round series against the two conference powerhouses, the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers. The Bobcats have been in the playoffs only once before, when they were swept in the first round in 2010. "We getting better as a team, we two games above .500," said Al Jefferson, who had 20 points and 18 rebounds. "But does it really matter where were at for seeding-wise? No, we just happy to be in the mix." Walker made a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws in the extra session, and Jefferson added two free throws to account for all of the Bobcats scoring. Charlotte went 1 for 7 from the field in overtime, while Washington was 0 for 8 and got its only point from a free throw by John Wall with 34 seconds remaining. Walker finished with 17 points and 12 assists for the Bobcats, who have their longest winning streak since March 2010. "Hes got courage," Charlotte coach Steve Clifford said. "He wants the ball late and hes not afraid to take the big shot." Wall had a candidate for most underwhelming triple-double of the season -- 14 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists -- and Gortat finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards, who were nearly run out of their own building in the first half for the second straight game and are limping toward the finishh line of their first playoff season since 2008.dddddddddddd Among Washington coach Randy Wittmans reviews: "To have no more energy or drive or enthusiasm than we showed in that first half, its disappointing. ... I was just not expecting to come out and go through the motions. ... When you dont put effort in, youre not going to have (a) good showing." Added veteran Gortat: "I guess were immature and just not experienced enough and I guess everything starts in the practice. The first few minutes were walking and just fooling around and this is how you start a game." Such comments put the focus on young All-Star Wall, who went 6 for 18 from the field and committed five turnovers. Wall disagreed with his coachs "go through the motions" assessment. "I dont feel that way," Wall said. "I feel like we competed. ... The last couple of games we havent been able to knock down shots." Wall had called this game the most important of the year, but he also made a whirlwind overnight trip to Texas on Monday to watch Kentucky lose the NCAA championship game. He said that had "nothing to do" with his performance. "I practiced yesterday and had a good day," Wall said. "Came here and had a game today. Its not like I went the night before." Trevor Ariza, who has been battling the flu, went 0 for 6 from the field for the Wizards. Washington was 1 for 15 from 3-point range. The Wizards again made defence optional in the early going, echoing their beatdown by the Chicago Bulls on Saturday. But Washington hit its stride in the third quarter and took its first lead of the game on Bradley Beals 15-foot jumper with 5:28 to play. Jefferson forced overtime with a layup that tied the game with 3.2 seconds remaining. Wall didnt get a shot off as time expired in regulation. Notes: Wizards F Nene, back after missing six-plus weeks with a sprained left knee, was understandably rusty. He missed all four of his free throws and finished with 10 points in 17 minutes. ... DENVER - Jarome Iginla felt a little more youthful on his 37th birthday even as he became the old man of the Colorado Avalanche. Hes energized by the challenge of not only trying to keep up with the likes of speedy forward Nathan MacKinnon, who is half Iginlas age, but also of helping this rising squad take another step in its growth. "I dont want to be arrogant, but I still believe I can be very good," said Iginla, who celebrated his birthday Tuesday by signing a three-year, $16 million deal with Colorado. "And this is a dynamic group. I think they work hard and theyre committed, and theyre just going to keep getting better and better." The Avs are coming off a season in which they tied a franchise record with 52 wins in Patrick Roys first year behind the bench and returned to the post-season for the first time since 2009-10. Among their top priorities in the off-season? Adding some grizzled veterans to the squad. First, the team picked up veteran forward Daniel Briere from Montreal for right wing P.A. Parenteau and a fifth-round pick in next years draft. Then, Colorado acquired defenceman Brad Stuart from the San Jose Sharks for a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-rounder in 2017. On Tuesday afternoon, shortly after losing fan favourite Paul Stastny in free agency — he signed a four-year, $28 million deal with division rival St. Louis — the Avs worked out a deal with Iginla. It wasnt a laborious task, especially given the friendship between Iginla and Avalanche Hall of Famer turned executive Joe Sakic. The two have been tight since their days with Team Canada and when Sakic made his pitch, Iginla intently listened. Then again, one of Iginlas kids is named Joe at least in part because of Sakic. "(Sakic) is a winner so it definitely had something to do with this," Iginla said. Iginla has played in 1,310 regular season games with Calgary, Pittsburgh and Boston. He had 30 goals in 78 games for the Bruins last season. "Jaromes track record speaks for itself," Sakic said. "He is one of the top goal scorers of all time, as well as a great leader. His addition will bolster our offence." As for being the elder statesman of the team, Iginla just laughed. "I feel good," said Iginla, whos earned two Olympic gold medals with Canada. "As far as my game dropping off, I dont think it will. ... I dont come here expecting to do less." He joins a team that captured a surprise Central Division crown. The turnaround of the Avalanche led to quite a few post-season awards, too, with Roy taking home coach of the year, MacKinnon being named the top rookie and Ryan OReilly capturing the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for gentlemanly play. Semyon Varlamov also was a finalist for outstanding goaltender, which went to Tuukka Rask of Boston. Sakic was hoping to return the nucleus for another run, but wasnt about to break the bank to make that happen. Sakic said two weeks ago the team had a salary structure in place, setting the financial bar in deals with Varlamov, Matt Duchene and captain Gabriel Landeskog. These days, Sakic is attempting to work out a long-term deal with OReilly, a restricted free agent who led the team with a career-high 28 goals in 2013-14. In the meantime, Sakic orchestrated a deal to add the 34-year-old Stuart in order to bring more tenacity to the Avalanches blue line. He was third on the Sharks in blocked shots (114) and hits (122) last season. Stuart may be called upon to mentor defenceman Nick Holden, who signed a three-year extension that runs through the 2017-18 season. Briere is another scorer who could help offset the loss of Stastny. Iginla likes the additions of Stuart and Briere. "Its kind of neat to join a new team, but also having other guys in the same boat and get to come in together," Iginla said. "Thats pretty cool." One of the enduring images in Avalanche history is Sakic passing the Stanley Cup over to Ray Bourque for him to hoist after their win in 2001. See Landeskog doing the same for Iginla one day? "Thats a hope," Iginla said. "These guys, theyre driven. I think there are lots of good things already happening." ___ AP Hockey Writer Larry Lage contributed. INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Sam needed no introduction. He provided one anyway, subtly spelling out his desire to be known simply as a football player whose sexuality isnt a national story. "Good afternoon. My name is Michael Sam. I play football for the University of Missouri," he said to commence his first public appearance since announcing hes gay. Sam smiled and laughed often during a 12 1/2-minute news conference at Lucas Oil Stadium, looking relaxed, jovial and confident while taking questions from the hundreds of reporters surrounding the podium. Despite credentials that include the Southeastern Conference co-defensive player of the year award, Sam is projected only as a mid-round pick in the draft in May. Hes 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, falling somewhere between a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme and an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system. Where he winds up, Sam said he doesnt care. "Im a pass rusher. If you put me in a situation to get the quarterback, Im going to get the quarterback. Whoever coaches or GMs, this league is a passing league. Id like to believe in myself as a good pass rusher," Sam said. Hes not worried about being accepted, either, in light of the bullying scandal that emerged in Miami. "If the Miami Dolphins drafted me I would be excited to be a part of that organization," Sam said. "But Im not afraid of going into that environment. I know how to handle myself. I know how to communicate with my teammates. I know how to communicate with the coaches and other staff I need to communicate with." Mostly, Sam wants to communicate this: "I just wish you guys would just see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player." His former Missouri teammates certainly did. "Hes happy with who he is. He doesnt shy away from who he is. Mike Sam has got a lot of personality. Hes a great guy. Hes not going to be any different than who he is every day," said wide receiver LDamian Washington, one of several ex-Tigers stars here for the NFLs annual scouting combine. If Sam were to slip down the draft board, determining a bias against his orientation or a fear of the potential distraction would be near impossible. If teams pass on him, theyre likely unsure how his combination of size and speed fits with their defence. "You only need one team. One team that believes in you. Theres 32 teams. You need one team," Washington said. Coaches and executives around the league were asked often this weekend for their thoughts on how Sam would fit, both on the field and in the locker room. "He would be welcomed, no different than any other player we have," New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said, adding: "The big thing we always talk about is respect in our locker room." With a victory seemingly slipping away late in the third quarter, his quick scoring flurry helped Golden State regain control early in the fourth. Then, when it seemed the Warriors wouldnt be able to hold off Indianas late charge, he knocked down a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 0.6 seconds to go, giving the Warriors a rare 98-96 victory in Indianapolis. "Well take any win we can get in this building," Thompson said. "This team is real good here. Theyre the best in the NBA (at home). To come here and get a win, its huge, especially on this road trip." Thompson was terrific in his dramatic closing act. He started the quarter by making his first three shots and finished with 16 of his 25 points over the final 12 minutes — none bigger than the baseline fadeaway he hit over George Hill. For the Warriors (37-24), it was a monumental victory. They have won five of six and are 6-2 since the All-Star break. They have matched last seasons road victory total (19), the first time theyve achieved the feat in back-to-back seasons since 1970-71 and 1971-72, and they snapped a six-game losing streak in Indy that dated to Feb. 5, 2007. The victory also gives Golden State the distinction of being the only team in the league this season with wins at Miami, the two-time defending league champion, and at Indiana, which owns the leagues best record and best home record (29-4). The Warriors can thank Thompson for bailing them out after blowing a 13-point lead with less than 6 1/2 minutes to go. "He was great," Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. "Hes durable and you take him for granted. Hes a guy whos never missed a game. He was big-time." It was a stinging loss for the Pacers (46-14), who had won five straight and could have clinched a playoff spot in front of a sellout crowd. Paul George had 12 points and eight rebounds in the first quarter. He finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, missing a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 23.9 seconds left and the 29-foot buzzer beater that would have won it as he fell into the scorers table. David West had 27 points and seven rebounds. Yet the leagues top-ranked defence allowed Golden State to shoot 44 per ceent from the field and make 10 of 20 3s — the latest uncharacteristic showing against the NBAs third-best team in defending the arc.dddddddddddd The only good thing was that the Pacers didnt lose any ground in the chase for the top seed in the East. Theyre still two games ahead of Miami after the Heat lost at Houston. But West knows the Pacers cant continue to rely on beating up bad teams and cranking up the intensity when necessary. "Mentally, weve got to be way tougher than we are because its time, you know, its just time," West said. "Its just not something that you can just say a week before the playoffs, say, OK. Youve got to work your way into it. But as a group, its time. Weve got a tough three-game trip coming up and its just time." The Warriors sure made things tough on the Pacers. They took a 10-8 first-quarter lead and didnt give it up until Lance Stephenson scored on a layup that made it 56-54 with 7:29 left in the third. Golden State started pulling away again with an 8-0 run late in the third, then fended off another Indiana spurt that got the Pacers to 73-70 after three. Thats when Thompson got involved. After making two free throws, he hit an 18-footer, a 3 and a 16-footer to give Golden State an 84-74 lead. When he hit his third 3 with 6:23 to go, the lead was 92-79 and the Pacers appeared to be doomed. "They caused us to protect the basket, which was a chain reaction to kick the ball out and shoot open 3s," George said. Indiana came right back. West, George and Roy Hibbert accounted for all the points in a 12-0 run that suddenly tied the score at 94 with 2:13 to go. But the Warriors regained the lead on David Lees layup and, after George tied it at 96 with 1:06 left, he missed an open 3. Thompson then hit the go-ahead basket and the Warriors celebrated as Georges potential winner was short. "It felt great. To hit that shot, Im not going to lie, it felt great," Thompson said. "I proved to people I can make that shot and I wanted that shot." NOTES: Stephen Curry had 19 points for the Warriors but did not score in the fourth quarter. ... Stephenson had 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists for Indiana. ... Golden State was 14 of 21 from the free throw line. TORONTO, Ontario -- Every other year, Griffin and Sam Reinhart skated on the same teams in minor hockey. Now the brothers from West Vancouver hope to be teammates for Canada at the world junior championship. Griffin, a 19-year-old defenceman for the Edmonton Oil Kings who was drafted fourth overall in 2012 by the New York Islanders, is a lock to make the squad even though he will be suspended for the first three preliminary round games due to a suspension incurred at last years world juniors in Ufa, Russia. Sam, who is in contention to be picked first overall in the 2014 NHL draft, is battling for a spot on the 22-man squad. Canada will be looking to end a four-year gold medal drought at the world juniors that begin Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden. "Its exciting -- it goes back to minor hockey," said 18-year-old Sam Reinhart, a centre for the Kootenay Ice. "Its nice to get back with him. "The last couple of years Ive had to play against him and I dont like that very much." They were on the ice together for some drills Friday as Canada opened a three-day camp on the international-size rink at the Mastercard Centre. As expected, Jonathan Drouin was not on the ice. The high-scoring Halifax Mooseheads forward is recovering from a concussion suffered in a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game last week. The 18-year-old is expected to recover in time for the tournament. The third overall pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the NHL draft in June was examined by team doctors on Thursday night. Coach Brent Sutter expects Drouin to be ready to skate and described his condition as "status quo." He said it would not hinder the teams preparations for the tournament. Griffin, Sam and 21-year-old Max Reinhart, a Calgary Flames prospect, are the sons of former NHL defenceman Paul Reinhart. All three started out as defencemen, but Sam and Max both ended up as centres. Griffin, a towering rearguard at six-foot-four 212 pounds, and the six-foot-one Sam are looking to become the third brother duo to play for Canada at the world juniors, after Randy and Mike Moeller in 1982 and Freddie and Dougie Hamilton in 2012. "Its always more fun playing with Sam than against him, so if hes able to make it as well it would be awesome for me," said Griffin. The brothers embody two issues on the squad -- Griffins suspension and Sam being among three "underage" players in camp along with Erie Otters 16-year-old phenom Connor McDavid and Barrie Colts defenceman Aaron Ekblad, who is one of Sam Reinharts main competitors for the No. 1 draft position. Griffin was slapped with a four-game ban for a slash during Canadas semifinal loss to the United States in Ufa. He served one game after that, and is suspended for the next four IIHF sanctioned events he enters. He will miss the first three group stage games in Malmo against Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia but will return for a Dec. 31 showdown with the Americans. "Ive definitely seen the schedule," he said. "I cant play the first three, but coming back to play the States on the 31st -- thats a huge rivalry. Everyone in Canada gets hyped up for those games." That Canada included him among the 25 camp invitees showed they value Reinharts package of size, skill and leadership enough that missing three games doesnt faze them. They are games Canada should win, and Sutter will still have six solid rearguards in the lineups. Reinhart will also be able to mesh with his teammates while playing in pre-tournament exhibition games next week against Finland, Sweden and Switzerland. But he appreciates the confidence the Hockey Canada management showed in him. "Itll be hard watching," he said. "Everyone wants to play. "Ive sat out before in the WHL with injuries, so Ill kind of take it like that. I know there was a chance they wouldnt take me because of the three games. Ill try to prove to them they made the right decision and try to be a leader on and off the ice when I return." They also had him paired with Matt Dumba, who was loaned to Canada for the tournament by the Minnesota Wild. Dumba is expected to be an anchor on Canadas defence, and they could end up as the teams top pairing. Sam Reinhart found himself once again on a line with McDavid, with Kerby Rychel of the Guelph Storm on left wing. Reinhart and McDavid, the runaway favourite to go first overall in the 2015 draft, have played together before, including at the world junior teams summer camp in Montreal and Lake Placid, N.Y. Reinhart moves over to right wing for the occasion. "I had a chance to play with (McDavid) and the hype is not wrong by any means," he said. "Hes a special player. Its easy to play with him." Like with most national teams, there are more centres than spots to put them in, so a few have moved to the wings. "Ive already made the transition to right wing," Sam Reinhart said. "Down the middle theres so much depth on our team. Ill play on the penalty kill, the power play, whatever they want me to do. Ill be ready." Drouins absence left Frederik Gauthier of the Rimouski Oceanic and Josh Anderson of London Knights -- the only player on the roster listed as a right winger with his team -- without a third man for their line, although the units Sutter and his staff used on the first day of camp are likely to change. If he is healthy, Drouin will likely play on whatever is the top offensive line. Anthony Mantha of the Val dor Foreurs, the QMJHL scoring leader, is a left-winger who found himself on the right side of London centre Bo Horvat and natural left winger Charles Hudon of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Centre Curtis Lazar of the Edmonton Oil Kings was on right wing with centre Nic Petan of the Portland Winterhawks and Hunter Shinkaruk of the Medicine Hat Tigers. And centre Felix Girard of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar played right wing with Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals at centre and Portlands Taylor Leier on the left side. During practice, the players were introduced to four former world juniors stars who were named honorary captains for the 2015 and 2017 tournaments to be shared by Toronto and Montreal. They are former Leafs Wendel Clark and Gary Roberts, former goalie Marc Denis and Montreal Canadiens player development man Martin Lapointe. The team has an exhibition game Saturday afternoon against local university players and a practice Sunday morning before leaving for Sweden. Joshua Garnett Jersey . The Toronto Blue Jays will look to rebound from a disastrous 14-1 loss as they host the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a four-game set tonight at Rogers Centre. Bostons bats exploded in Mondays opener, as David Ortiz belted a pair of two-run homers, Stephen Drew homered and drove in four runs and the Red Sox pummeled the Blue Jays, 14-1. The Blue Jays, fresh off a series win against the Texas Rangers, got a run via consecutive doubles from Erik Kratz and Juan Francisco in the third inning. Drew Hutchison (6-9) did not make it out of the top half of the third en route to his fifth loss in his last six starts. "It was a bad night," Hutchison said. "I didnt give us a chance to win." Hoping for similar support tonight the Red Sox will rely on righty Jake Peavy, whose only win this season came against the Jays. Hes dropped eight decisions since that win back on April 25 and is a miserable 1-8 on the year with a 4.59 ERA. "You kind of put that aside. Hes worked deep into games. Hes pitched low-run games. A number of days hes pitched on the wrong day, and days we havent supported him with a lot of offense," Farrell said. "But more importantly, hes done a very good job of separating some tough luck situations ... and not letting it affect his performance." Toronto, meanwhile, will hand the ball to lefty J.A. Happ, who is 7-5 with a 4.91 ERA. Happ hasnt started since giving up five runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels back on July 7, but pitched in relief on July 12 against Tampa, surrendering two runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Happ is 2-2 in six games (5 starts) versus the Red Sox with a 5.33 ERA. Despite Mondays shellacking Toronto has won four of its seven meetings with the Red Sox this season. Mike Napoli went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored, while Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vazquez each had two RBI for the surging Red Sox, winners in eight of their last nine. "We had a good offensive approach up and down the lineup," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "It was a well played game in all phases." Bostons season-high output overshadowed a terrific outing from John Lackey (11-6), who did his part with seven innings of one-run, two-hit ball. Cheap Nike Free Shoes Canada . Flushing Meadows, NY - Five-time major titlist Maria Sharapova moved on, while second-seeded Simona Halep and two-time champion Venus Williams were a pair of third-round losers Friday at the U.S. Open. Sharapova, seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated No. 26 Sabine Lisicki in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 to close out play on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The reigning French Open victor and 2006 champion here in New York will face 10th-seeded Caroline Wozniacki next in the round of 16. Wozniacki cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 result over 18th-seeded German Andrea Petkovic. Wozniacki posted a runner-up finish in New York in 2009. The French Open runner-up Halep succumbed to 32-year-old Croatian qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 on the famed Grandstand court. Halep is just 4-3 since titling in her native Romania last month. Halep had reached at least the quarterfinals at the years first three Grand Slam events. Lucic-Baroni cried tears of joy after the stunning result. "This is incredible," said the former teen phenom. "I believed the whole time." "After so many years, my God, this is just incredible," Lucic-Baroni added. "Every painful moment was worth it." Meanwhile, 13th-seeded gritty Italian Sara Errani outlasted the 19th-seeded former world No. 1 Venus in 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5) fashion. After swapping a pair of bagel sets, Errani and the seven-time major champion Venus got down to business in the third, where Venus blew a 5-3 lead as the Italian eventually forced a tiebreak. The former French Open runner-up Errani set up a match point with a backhand winner and closed out the entertaining bout with a forehand winner into an open court after just over two hours of compelling tennis. "It was a really tough match, even if I won the first set 6-0," said Errani. "Shes an amazing player. I just tried to focus on every point. I tried to keep going, not thinking too much about the score." Errani finished with 18 winners and 25 unforced errors, while Williams was hurt by 52 miscues. The 34-year-old Venus was the back-to-back U.S. Open champ in 2000 and 2001 and is also a two-time runner-up in New York. Errani will face Lucic-Baroni in the round of 16. Meanwhile, ninth-seeded former No. 1 and 2008 U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic swatted Swede Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-0 in 58 minutes at Ashe and 17- year-old promising Swiss Belinda Bencic ousted sixth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 6-1, 7-5. The Serbian Jankovic will face Bencic in her next outing. Four of the top-10 seeds have been knocked out of the depleted womens draw. Czech left-hander Lucie Safarova, seeded 14th, snuck past 22nd-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 in 2 hours, 25 minutes. A mild upset came when Chinese Peng Shuai took out 28th-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-3 on the hardcourts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. As the land which invented modern day Association Football and with that ticket to Rio on the line, it seemed Prince Harry included, the entire nations focus was entirely fixated on a sold out Wembley Stadium in North London Tuesday evening. Not mine. Leafy London, SW6 and a football stadium constructed in the 1890s on prime real estate nestled alongside the banks of the River Thames be my destination. The history of the venerable Craven Cottage dates all the way back to the 1780s, where the original cottage existed until burning down in dubious circumstances in the late 1880s. Modernized with great care and expense over recent seasons, Craven Cottage has been Fulhams home stadium for close to 120-years. On a chilling London Tuesday evening, the Cottage, as its affectionately known in these SW6 parts, played host as Canada took on a World Cup Finals bound Socceroos. A so termed friendly and the culmination of a 10-day London camp for our Mens National Team. Conceding the softest of goals from the opening whistle within the same time frame Usain Bolt takes to win three gold medals, was not the idealist of starts. However following the goal, the 3,500 or so in attendance witnessed a spirited first half performance from our latest creation of a mens team. A performance which could best be described as putting into applied practice, in a live setting, Benito Floros 10-day football theory master class staged over at QPRs training complex - located some 10 miles due west and within close proximity of Londons Heathrow airport. With a high energy and some outstanding movement in the attacking half of play, the mens national team created gilt edged opportunity over the next 44 minutes as they strove with Canadian-like endeavour to tie it up. Losing Julian de Guzman early on due to hamstring problems didnt dent enthusiasm or guile. The back of the net though remained as elusive as it has been over recent times and if it continues for much longer, the only trophy our MNT could win is if they give out prizes for goalless seasons. Were all now well aware the storm in a tea cup which erupted here in London Thursday in regards to a certain aspect of Roy Hodgsons half-time pep talk in the Wembley World Cup qualifier Tuesday night. What though happened in that Canadian dressing room at the interval remains a mystery. Yes a number of not fully bled youngsters were introduced. So what? They knew their roles going in. Woefully though and almost to a man, including the more experienced players, any manner of enthusiasm and forward thinking was left in that 115-year old dressing room. Lethargy took over and tracking back became a thing of the past. Speaking to captain Dwayne De Rosario post match he had an explanation. "Well obviously in the second half guys a lot of guys who havent got a lot of caps came in. Benito did tell us at the start of the game we would be coming off to give opportunity to the young guys to see them in this environment and test the waters." Break water they certainly did not. Australia were so dominant in the second-half, thoughts of San Pedro Sula came racing back as the Roos added two more easy goals. It finished 3-0 in favour of a nation which only four daays before Tuesdays match unceremoniously jettisoned their head coach.dddddddddddd One who only recently delivered Australia to yet another World Cup Finals. Anyone know when Roman Abramovich took up his role with the Australian Football Federation? My gosh Holga. Yes youd overseen two matches against Brazil and France where combined your team leaked in a humbling 12. No room for that in Frank Lowrys world. Lowry the maverick Australian multi-millionaire who almost single handedly has dragged Australian football from the dark ages to where they are today. Such is his influence that Australia was able to navigate out and away from the more challenging Oceania Continental Conference and transferred over to lightweight Asia. Not sure if this transfer came in the summer or January window. De Rosario was very matter of fact about the defeat. "Its disappointing, as its another loss in a game where yet again we did not score." Adding, "We have got to continue to work, and work and work. We got a long road ahead of us as you see tonight. Lets stay positive, lets make sure the group stays positive and learn from our mistake and hopefully every game we get better and better. I still see there is quality out there, despite the result." For many a veteran, this could be the cue to hang up the international boots. Not for this 2011 MVP, whose club season has been so pitiful, DC United have even managed to make Toronto FC appear enthralling like. De Rosario disclosing, "No it never crosses my mind. I still enjoy wearing the Canadian jersey, Im still proud to be called up. Its a huge honour for me, I still love the game. I believe I still have something to offer and I think I proved that in the first half." Disappointed with the outcome Tuesday the match itself was the curtain drop to the vital 10 days spent in camp with QPR playing the role of very gracious hosts.  "I didnt see Harry, but the first team were training and it was a great environment for the young guys." The "Harry" De Rosario refers to is not Prince Harry but that old scoundrel himself Harry Redknapp. Which bought back memories of the first time I attended a professional football match - I was a snooty nosed little five-year old urchin in tow with my parents and two brothers. Craven Cottage was the venue as Fulham entertained West Ham. A West Ham team resplendent with the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters with a very youthful looking Redknapp playing in midfield that day. Fulham had a world cup winner in their ranks too, George Cohen. De Rosario himself was left suitably impressed with the venue. "The young guys see this stadium on TV and to have that experience they got tonight was valuable." Marooned in likely the hottest metropolis in the globe right now didnt faze the veteran when asked if he had chance to get out and enjoy the host city of last summers Olympics. "Not really. The focus was camp, and the game. We got out for a little bit for four hours or so but I know what this city is all about. The main thing was this game today." Next Week Part II:  Julian de Guzman – provides insightful thoughts on Floro, and The Kids during Camp London. Plus De Guzmans rather candid and strained thoughts on his hometown club, Toronto FC.
