PHILADELPHIA -- The Chicago Cubs have activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the disabled list and placed Emilio Bonifacio on it. Sweeney started in centre field and batted second against the Phillies on Friday night. He was on the DL since May 3 because of a right hamstring strain. Sweeney was batting .200 with six RBIs coming into the game. Bonifacio has right rib cage inflammation. Hes batting .266 with 13 stolen bases this season. Not Peyton Manning. Hes holding on to the heartache to stoke his competitive fire. In his first public comments since the highest-scoring team in NFL history was destroyed by Seattle from the opening snap two months ago, Manning said the Broncos 43-8 loss will serve as motivation in 2014. "I dont really have a word for it. Obviously it was disappointing and well use that to fuel us this off-season and hopefully itll make us better," Manning said Wednesday prior to giving the keynote address at the Boy Scouts of America Sports Breakfast in Denver. "I know the front office has addressed some off-season needs in free agency and of course the drafts coming up and now its up to the players to put in the hard work in the weight room, the film room and on the practice field to try to be a better team this year and that all starts Monday." The Broncos gather next week for the official start of off-season workouts with a roster that looks a lot different from the one that lost by five TDs to the Seahawks. Gone are Champ Bailey, Eric Decker, Wesley Woodyard, Zane Beadles, Knowshon Moreno and Chris Kuper, whose departures cleared cap space for the additions of DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib and Emmanuel Sanders. "Eli told me he was excited about DeMarcus leaving his division; he can no longer hit him. And Im glad hes on my team," Manning said of the former Dallas Cowboys pass-rusher who headlined John Elways off-season makeover. Manning gave his blessing to the promotion of second-year running back Montee Ball to primary ball carrier. "Theres no question with the loss of Knowshon, who was just nothing short of awesome thiis past year, and was a great teammate .dddddddddddd.. Montees going to have more responsibilities and I think hes going to answer that challenge," Manning said. Although Sanders joined Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, Bubba Caldwell and Wes Welker at Mannings annual passing camp at Duke last week, which the five-time MVP QB called a "good kick-start to the off-season," the official start of off-season workouts is Monday. Although Manning and the Broncos will view their loss to Seattle as a scar, much like they did their defeat to Baltimore in the playoffs a year earlier, Manning agreed the gathering will allow the Broncos to begin looking ahead. "Yeah, you have to move forward. You have to kind of re-establish your identity of the 2014 team," Manning said. "The 2013 team was a good season in a lot of ways. Theres no question it did not end the way we wanted it to. But we have to try to find a way to build off that, and try to take it a step further, try to finish." The Broncos are heavily favoured by oddsmakers to become the first team since the Buffalo Bills in 1993 to return to the Super Bowl the year after losing the big game, but the 38-year-old QB who set NFL records by throwing for 55 TDs and 5,447 yards last year knows the challenge facing Denver. Only two teams have lost a Super Bowl and bounced back to win the next one: the 1971 Dallas Cowboys and the 1972 Miami Dolphins. "Absolutely I am," Manning said when asked if hes hungrier than ever. "Thats what I want to do (win the title). Thats what the Denver Broncos want to do. I am glad to be part of a team that wants that. I need to do my part. Thats what I think about every day I go to work, doing my job to help the Denver Broncos get better." ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The photo emblazoned on the front of Chris Harris Jr.s navy sweat shirt was a tribute to his favourite Denver Broncos cornerback — himself, of course. And the No fly zone caption underneath the image was fitting, too, since his side of the field has certainly become restricted air space, with QBs shying away from him.Still, Harris cover skills fly under the radar, hardly mentioned in the same breath as other elite defensive backs around the league. But he certainly got paid like one last week when the Broncos rewarded him with a five-year contract extension worth $42.5 million.Thats actually a hometown discount for an organization that took a chance on the undrafted college free agent out of Kansas in 2011. Had Harris hit free agency in the off-season, he wouldve earned more.Just ask him.I definitely could have gotten more off the open market, laughed the 25-year-old Harris, who had his wife and infant daughter in the audience Monday at a news conference to announce his extension. I know that, we all know that, but its not all about money at the end of the day. Its about being happy, and Im satisfied.Well, satisfied everywhere but on the field, anyway. Because he plays with an attitude after going undrafted, which he thinks is the root cause as to why he doesnt receive as much recognition as, say, a Richard Sherman or a Darrelle Revis or even his teammate — in Denver and at Kansas — Aqib Talib. This could be the season where Harris gains more notoriety, though, possibly make his first Pro Bowl team. Hes having that kind of year for the AFC West champion Broncos (11-3), with three interceptions and a team-leading 15 passes defended in limited chances.I always thought once you get your contract, I think thats when the accolades and all that stuff comes, said Harris, the protege of recently retired and future Hall of Famer Champ Bailey. But I think people are still going to see me as an underrated player just because of my size and the way I came into the league.Thats just something where I know my whole career Im going to have to deal with that.Broncos boss John Elway certainly saw something in him. And after only a handful of practices, too.He stood out and I said, We have something here, Elway recounted. Since hes been here, hes shown what he can do.Especially last season, when he turned in a standout season before tearing his left ACL in the Broncos divisional playoff against the Chargers. He watched the Super Bowl from the sideline and then underwent surgery. He was back in less than seven months. Hasnt missed a step, either.Chris just has something in his head and his heart — he dont like to lose, Talib said. Hes one of the most competitive guys Ive ever come across in my life. The Broncos have now made quite an investment in their secondary, locking up Harris and Talib to the tune of nearly $100 million.A hefty price, but necessary in this quarterback-savvy league. The passing games a big part of the game right now and so you cant have enough good cover guys, Elway said. To be able to have two guys like we have in Aqib and now Chris under contract, its very, very important.Next up for Elway is working out deals for receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas. Looming on the horizon is hybrid linebacker Von Miller as well. Were hoping that we can get everybody, Elway said. Its never going to be easy, but Chris was the target to start with and we were thankful to get that done, so we hope that we can continue to do that and keep this team together.Im happy for guys like Chris. Im happy for him because hes the type of guy you want around, a great competitor, tough. It just gives him confidence to know what we think of him but also know that hes got that ability to step up and be that kind of leader.___AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Vans Shoes Clearance . ARLINGTON, Va. -- Alex Ovechkin apologized for Russias hockey performance at the Olympics, a sentiment put in perspective by the encouraging news that his father was on the way home after heart surgery. Far more upset was Nicklas Backstrom, who remains clearly miffed that an allergy medication hes taken for years cost him a chance to play for a gold medal. The Washington Capitals held their first post-Olympics practice Tuesday, a session overshadowed by residue from the Winter Games even as they tried to focus on the resumption of their NHL schedule. Ovechkin was one of the faces of Sochi, bent on winning the gold on home ice. Instead, the Russians were eliminated in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive Olympics. "First of all, I want to say sorry to the fans," Ovechkin said. "Because its once in a lifetime opportunity to represent your country in the Olympics, and you didnt get the results, you didnt get any medal. Of course the fans, the media and the people who support Russia, family, was upset, but life goes on." Ovechkin took the Olympic disappointment especially hard four years ago, but this time he had to immediately turn his attention to his family. His father, who has a history of heart problems, became ill following one of his sons games and required surgery. Ovechkin wasnt told until three days later, after Russia had been eliminated. "Soon as I found out that hes in hospital and hes feeling not that good and he could be dying, I just forget the game that we lose against Finland. ... Just go there and spend time with him and saw him," Ovechkin said. "It was great feelings to see whats happening and how hes feeling. Thats most important thing." Ovechkin said his father, mother and brother were flying home to Moscow on Tuesday. Ovechkin said he understands the criticism he received for his play during the Olympics -- "I didnt score lots of goals out there" -- but the 28-year-old three-time league MVP appears ready to refocus on the Capitals, who resume play Thursday at Florida. "This is a very tough loss for me and for Russia, but Im almost 30," Ovechkin said. "I have to handle it. I have to fight through it." The lingering Olympic sting was more evident on the face of Backstrom, who helped lead Sweden to the gold medal game but was pulled from the lineup shortly before faceoff because he had failed a doping test. Without one of its top players, Sweden lost 3-0 to Canada. "Ive had allergies for seven years, since I got here," Backstrom said. "Everyone that lives in the Washington area knows how bad it is here. Ive been taking Zyrtec-D for the last seven years and I havent been doing anything differently. Ive been playing internationally, in the world championships (and) Olympics before, and so I havent done anything differently." An ingredient in the allergy medicine is on the list of banned substances for Olympic competition, but Backstrom said he was told by the Sweden team doctor that he could take one pill a day without triggering a positive test. "Who do I blame?" Backstrom said. "Well, I followed the doctors recommendation." Backstrom said he expects a two-week wait to find out whether he will be awarded his silver medal, which is being held at the International Ice Hockey Federation offices in Zurich. "Obviously, its not fun to deal with," Backstrom said. "I dont wish no one to have to go through this, if Im going to be honest with you. Its not fun. But Ive got to look forward to play next game on Thursday. Ive got to focus on Washington right now." Backstroms teammates, much like the international hockey community in general, were shocked at how his situation was handled. "Its just ridiculous that it can happen at a big tournament like this," forward Martin Erat said, "at the Olympics just before the finals when everybody is ready to go and you just want to enjoy the sport. It just happened because of some stupidity, and its just unbelievable that this can happen in the Olympics." The Capitals sent five players to Sochi, and four of them have dealt with some sort of unexpected life event that has derailed an attempt to return to normalcy after the Olympics. Ovechkin had the health scare with his father, Backstrom has the fallout from the doping test, Swedish forward Marcus Johansson is stuck in Stockholm because of an visa issue -- the Capitals expect him to join them in Florida for Thursdays game -- and Erat returned to his family in Nashville, Tenn., as soon as he could after the Czech Republic was eliminated. "We just finished our quarterfinal game, and I went for my phone, and our friend had called me and said your baby girl, Victoria Bella, is born," Erat said. "First we lost in the quarterfinal, it was hard to swallow, and when I got the news, it brought back a smile on my face." Air Max 90 Cheap Sale .C. -- Cam Newton wasnt flawless on Sunday. The Hampshire captain is in line to make his long-awaited Test debut at Headingley having staked his claim with some excellent performances in Englands Lions and one-day squads.Vince bats at No 3 for his county, a position currently held in the England side by Middlesexs Nick Compton, but could come straight in at No 5 following James Taylors early retirement. The 25-year-old caught the eye with a brilliant century against Yorkshire at Leeds two weeks ago and Botham believes he could get his chance in his preferred position of first wicket down.Vince must play, and could bat at three but it depends on how they (the selectors) want to go and if they stick with Compton, said Botham. Hes been knocking on the door for a while, hes been in great form and deserves his chance. James Vince could make his debut when England play Sri Lanka in the 1st Test at Headingley. Id bat him at three, Joe Root at four and Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes at five and six, but they may place trust in their bowlers and decide to go for an extra batsman, well just have to see.The England legend does not expect a repeat of Sri Lankas series win against England two years ago and is tipping Alastair Cooks side to complete a 3-0 series whitewash.Botham added: England should win the series comfortably. MINNEAPOLIS -- After what Chris Parmelee has been through the last six weeks, hell savour this home run for a while. Parmelee hit a game-ending shot in the ninth inning and the Minnesota Twins overcame David Ortizs big night to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-6 on Tuesday. "Its huge. Its one of those things thats a confidence builder," said Parmelee, who failed to make the roster out of spring training and cleared waivers before ending up back in the minors yet again. "In the long run, youve got to keep grinding." Ortiz went 4 for 5 with two homers and four RBIs, but it wasnt enough for Boston. Kurt Suzuki singled with two outs off reliever Andrew Miller (1-1) before Parmelee lined an 0-1 pitch into the right-field seats for his first two RBIs of the season. Parmelee has spent parts of the last three seasons with Minnesota, but hasnt been able to carry over the power he shows in the minors to the big league club. "He got sent down, frustrated, out of spring training," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He worked really hard down there and got back up here by playing his way back up, which is what youre supposed to do. A big one there for him." Eduardo Nunez homered and Brian Dozier had two RBIs in a five-run second for Minnesota. Ortiz hit solo homers in the first and fourth and is tied with Jim Rice on the Red Sox list with 382. It was the 42nd multihomer game for Big Papi, who began his career with the Twins and now has 17 homers and 47 RBIs against his former team. "One day youre going to go home, look back and see your names, see your name located right next to those guys, and thats a pretty good damn career," Ortiz said. Ortiz added an RBI single in the sixth and another one in the seventh that made it 6-5. "Our meetings were, Dont let him beat us. Well, that didnt work. Well have to change our meetings," Gardenhire said. Glen Perkins (1-0) pitched the ninth, striking out Ortiz and Mike Napoli to strand Shane Victorino at first base. Boston scored three times in the seventh and tied the score at 6 after reliever Matt Guerrier walked pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes with the bases loaded. Caleb Thielbar came on to strike out former Twins catcher A.J. Pierzynski with the bases loaded to stop the rally. Leading 6-3, Minnesota left the bases loaded in the sixth. It also stranded runners at second and third in the third and fifth. Red Sox starter Jake Peavy allowed six runs on nine hits in 4 1-3 innings and failed to complete at least five innings for the first time in 18 starts with Boston. Ricky Nolasco allowed three runs and struck out six in six innings for the Twins. Joe Mauer and Suzuki each had an RBI single. The Minnesota Wild goal horn blared every time the Twins scored a run as the Wild played the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL playoffs a few miles down the road in St. Paul. As soon as Parmelee touched home plate, the horn blared even louder as his teammates mobbed him all the way to the dugout. "I was honestly just trying to hit a ball in the gap somewhere, watch Suzuki run," said Parmelee, who also hit a game-winning homer 10 days ago for Triple-A Rochester. "I was sitting fastball. You have to sit fastball against that guy. His slider is pretty nasty." A victory would have given the Red Sox their first three-game winning streak of the season. "It takes the air out of your sails quick. We felt like we were gaining some momentum," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Had we got through that last inning, we felt like we were in good shape in terms of who was remaining in their bullpen versus ours, but you tip your hat to Parmelee, who got one of one of the better left-handers in the game right now." Farrell originally listed Peavy as Wednesdays starter, but said he intended to start Peavy on Tuesday all along and "screwed up" when announcing the probables for this series. NOTES: Twins GM Rob Antony said outfielder Josh Willingham, out since April 7 with a broken wrist, took early batting practice and could begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend. ... Antony also said an MRI showed a re-aggravation of the wrist injury sustained by top prospect Byron Buxton late in spring training. Buxton will work out in Fort Myers, Florida, until the wrist feels better. ... Peavy has allowed a home run in nine straight regular-season starts. ... Farrell said before the game that Gardenhire and Indians manager Terry Francona will be his coaches for the All-Star game at Target Field in July. ... Felix Doubront (1-3, 5.09 ERA) originally was scheduled to start Tuesday for Boston, but was given an extra day of rest and will start Wednesday against Kevin Correia (1-4, 6.34). Denver Broncos 1 (31) - Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State; 2 (56) - Cody Latimer, WR, Indiana; 3 (95) - Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan; 5 (156) - Lamin Barrow, OLB. LSU; 6 (207) - Matthew Paradis, OC, Boise State; 7 (242) - Corey Nelson, OLB, Oklahoma Top Picks Analysis: The rich got a little richer as John Elway laced a pair of doubles that could turn out to be much more despite his relatively poor draft positioning. Denver has totally revamped its shaky secondary in the offseason, first adding lockdown corner Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward in free agency before drafting talented Ohio State corner Bradley Roby with the 31st overall pick. Roby had top-20 talent but his stock took a hit because he was inconsistent with the Buckeyes and had a high-profile off-the-field incident days before the draft. Lengthy second-round wide receiver Cody Latimer shapes up as the potential replacement for the departed Eric Decker, while third-round offensive tackle Michael Schofield should provide immediate depth and could turn into a starter down the line if he hits the weight room hard. Best Value Pick: Latimer needs to sharpen his route-running skills but he has a chance to do some special things with Peyton Manning throwing the ball to him. "You just need to get in the hip pocket of Peyton Manning," NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said. "What a great situation for this young man. Hes a height/weight specimen. He needs to learn how to run routes and separate from defenders." Questionable Calls: Schofield is probably not athletic enough to play on the edge right now and he lacks the functional football strength to kick inside. There were better options on the board for Elway. Summary: The Broncos helped themselves at two need positions (corner and wide receiver) and generally scored well on the value meter throughout the process. FINAL GRADE: B Undrafted rookie free agent signings: DE Kenny Anunike, Duke; OLB Shaquil Barrett, Colorado State; RB Kapri Bibbs, Colorado State; WR Isaiah Burse, Fresno State; P Steven Clark, Auburn; RB Brennan Clay, Oklahoma; DT Mister Cobble, Michigan State; WR Bennie Fowler, Michigan State; WR Greg Hardin, North Dakota State; DE Greg Latta, Purdue; QB Bryn Renner, North Carolina; OT Aslam Sterling, Kansas; CB Jordan Sullen, Tulane; RB Juwan Thompson, Duke; CB Louis Young, Georgia Tech Kansas City Chiefs 1 (23) - Dee Ford, DE, Auburn; 3 (87) - Phillip Gaines, CB, Rice; 4 (124) - DeAnthony Thomas, RB, Oregon; 5 (163) - Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia; 6 (193) - Zach Fulton, OG, Tennessee; 6 (200) - Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, OT, McGill; Top Picks Analysis: Despite a desperate need for speed at the wide receiver position Kansas City went edge pass rusher at No. 23 overall, taking Auburn defensive end Dee Ford. On paper Ford projects as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense the Chiefs play but Kansas City already has a pair of stars at the position -- Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. The Chiefs didnt have a second-round pick and addressed depth at the cornerback position in the third by adding lengthy Rice cornerback Phillip Gaines, who should fit in as an option behind starters Sean Smith and Brandon Flowers, although Flowers is reportedly on the trading block. Best Value Pick: Fourth-round running back DeAnthony Thomas shapes up as a nice replacement for Dexter McCluster, who left for Tennessee in free agency. The 5-foot-9 Thomas could be an explosive third-down back and an excellent return specialist. Questionable Calls: At just 6-foot-2 and 252 pounds there is no way Ford can play the five-technique in the 3-4 so hes going to be stuck behind both Houston, who is signed through next season, and Hali, who is locked up through 2015, for now. A speedy wide receiver would have been more helpful, at least for 2014. Summary: Ford and Gaines probably wont help all that much until a year or two down the line. The Chiefs seemed to do better in the middle rounds where they got their replacement for McCluster in Thomas, and nabbed a solid developmental quarterback prospect in Aaron Murray. FINAL GRADE: B- Undrafted rookie free agent signings: RB Charcandrick West, Abilene Christian; WR Albert Wilson, Georgia State; RB James Baker, Idaho; OL Ben Gottschalk, SMU; DB David Van Dyke, Tennessee State; S Daniel Sorensen, BYU; RB Joey Demartino, Utah State; LB Ben Johnson, Tennessee-Martin; C Cole Pensick, Nebraska; K Cairo Santos, Tulane; WR Darryl Surgent, Louisiana Lafayette; S Kacy Rodgers, Miami; C Vyncent Jones, Utah; QB Jon Jennings, Saginaw Valley State; DT Kona Schwenke, Notre Dame; G Stetson Burnett, Tulsa; DT Kenneth Carter, Auburn; DE Shawn Shupperd, Eastern Kentucky; CB Tevrin Brandon, Monmouth; OL Will Latu, Abilene Christian; LB Brandon Denmark, Florida A&M Oakland Raiders 1 (5) - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo; 2 (36) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State; 3 (81) - Gabe Jackson, OG, Mississippi State; 4 (107) - Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech; 4 (116) - Keith McGill, CB, Utah; 7 (219) - Travis Carrie, CB, Ohio; 7 (235) - Shelby Harris, DE, Illinois State; 7 (247) - Jonathan Dowling, SS, Western Kentucky Top Pick Analysis: The Raiders are almost always wild cards when it comes to the NFL Draft but the organization took a far more conventional approach in 2014. Oakland didnt waver at No. 5 overall when Buffalo linebacker Khalil Mack, universally regarded as one of the best four players in the draft, fell to them. The Raiders certainly had bigger needs like quarterback but general manager Reggie McKenzie wasnt spooked by that and stayed true to his board. Oakland was rewarded for its astute work early in the draft when signal caller Derek Carr fell to the second round and was still available at No. 36 overall. "A lot of teams thought he was the best pure thrower in draft," NFL Network Draft analyst Mike Mayock said of Carr. In the third round the Raiders were able to bolster the interior of their offensive line by selecting Mississippi State guard Gabe Jackson, who has a very high football IQ and projects as a starter early in his career. Best Value Pick: Keith McGill, a fourth-round pick out of Utah, is a Brandon Browner-sized cornerback who could excel in press-man coverage, Questionable Calls: There really wasnt much to quibble about in this draft but if you have to take issue with something, look to the seventh round where defensive end Shelby Harris probably wasnt a draftable commodity. Summary: McKenzie seems to be making the most of his third and possibly final chance to turn things around in Oakland. Mack was in the conversation to be the No. 1 overall pick while Carr is a solid developmental prospect at QB and Jackson should be a rather useful addition. DRAFT GRADE: A Undrafted rookie free agent signings: FB Karl Williams, Utah; WR Mike Davis, Texas; TE Scott Simonson, Assumption; RB George Atkinson, Notre Dame; WR D.J. Coles, Virginia Tech; TE Jake Murphy, Utah; OT Danny Kistler, Montana; WR Noel Grigsby, San Jose State LB Carlos Fields, Winston Salem State; DE Austin Flynn, Arkansas; QB Rob Henry, Purdue San Diego Chargers 1 (25) - Jason Verrett, CB, TCU; 2 (50) - Jeremiah Attaochu, OLB, Georgia Tech; 3 (89) Chris Watt, OG, Notre Dame; 5 (165) - Ryan Carrethers, NT, Arkansas State; 6 (201) - Marion Grice, RB, Arizona State; 7 (240) - Tevin Reese, WR, Baylor Top Picks Analysis: The Chargers went into this draft hoping to improve on their 29th-ranked and AFC- worst pass defense. TCU cornerback Jason Verrett is undersized at 5-foot-9 but shapes up as a Captain Munnerlyn-type, a player who battles enough to compete on the outside during early downs before moving into the slot and becoming a difference maker on obvious passing downs. San Diego moved up in the second round to take Georgia Tech outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, a high-motored edge player with significant pass rushing upside. In the third round the Chargers took heady Notre Dame offensive guard Chris Watt, a very experienced college player who is a great technician and should develop into a solid starter. Best Value Pick: San Diego needed a true nose tackle and was able to get one in the fourth round by taking Arkansas States Ryan Carrethers, a 340-pound, NFL-Strong two-down player. Questionable Calls: The Chargers made four really sound picks before reaching a bit in the later rounds. Seventh-round wide receiver Tevin Reese for instance is not really a legitimate NFL prospect. Summary: Chargers general manager Tom Telesco didnt have a ton of picks to work with but he generally made sound, prudent decisions when it was his turn. FINAL GRADE: B Undrafted rookie free agent signings: S Alden Darby, Arizona State; DE Colton Underwood, Illinois State; DT Tenny Palepoi, Utah; DT Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe, Boise State; TE Mike Flacco, New Haven; WR Javontee Herndon, Arkansas; RB D.J. LAS VEGAS -- Bantamweight champion (Rowdy) Ronda Rousey made short work of Alexis Davis, demolishing the Canadian in just 16 seconds in the co-main event of UFC 175 Saturday night. It was a dominant performance by the reigning rock star of MMA. Davis, ranked second among 135-pound contenders, literally didnt know what hit her. Rousey hurt Davis with a punch to the face at the centre of the cage, punished her with a knee then took her down with a hard judo throw, with Montreal referee Yves Lavigne stepping in seconds later after Davis absorbed some 10 rapid-fire blows to the face. A stunned Davis had no idea what had happened as she clung to the ref after the stoppage before a Mandalay Bay Event Center crowd of 10,088 that hardly had time to take its seats. "Obviously a lot going through my head right now," Davis said at the post-fight news conference. "Well, what are you going to do. Theres a lot of stuff that I didnt do that I wanted to do ... But live and learn from your mistakes. Just get back up and keep fighting." The 16-second knockout is tied with Frank Shamrocks win over Kevin Jackson for second fastest in a UFC championship fight. Andrei Arlovskis 15-second KO of Paul Buentello is the fastest. Rousey was promptly offered the UFC 176 main event on Aug. 2 -- featherweight champion Jose Aldo recently pulled out due to injury -- to which she said in the cage that she would consult her coaches and go ahead with their say-so. UFC president Dana White said later that he had no idea why the offer was made, calling it "the biggest idiotic move in the history of our production team." Rousey will need time off to heal, despite the short outing. She had nine stitches near her knuckle on the first finger of her right hand after the fight, the result of a cyst that had caused the skin on her knuckle to come loose after her last few fights. The champion also said she will need knee surgery down the line to correct a chronic issue. Rousey did say she was open to fighting on the UFCs New Years card. The 27-year-old Rousey came into the fight as a 10-1 favourite to beat Davis, a 29-year-old from Port Colborne, Ont., who fights out of San Jose. If the co-main event was short and violent, the main event was 25 minutes of sweat, strategy and stamina. Middleweight champion Chris Weidman needed to dig deep to dispose of former light-heavyweight title-holder Lyoto (The Dragon) Machida via a 49-45, 48-47, 49-46 decision. "Hes as good as I thought," Weidman said of Machida. Asked if he was ever hurt in the fight, the champion replied: "Probably. I cant remember right now." He said later he had been unable to hit the last two weeks because of hand issues, acknowledging his camp had been fraught with problems. In the past, Machida has been accused of being a boring fighter. But the Brazilian gave Weidman everything he could handle and aggressively went for the finish late after falling behind early. He was rewarded with loud cheers after the fight. "Hes a true champion," Machida (21-5) said of Weidman, who had never gone five rounds before. The battered Brazilian smiled and held his fist up as he walked out of the cage. Weidman left wrapped in a U.S. flag. Weidman, who came in as a 2-1 favourite, looked much bigger in the cage than Machida and stalked him in the first round. The elusive Machida dodged blows and looked to counter-attack but Weidman kept coming. Weidman (12-0) scored a takedown late in the second round, smothering Machida while doing damage at the fence. When the Brazilian got up, he ate a knee. Machida went down again in the third, to cheers from the pro-U.S. element of the crowd. Weidman cut him with a punch late in the round and took him down again before bodyslamming him to the canvas. Machida, to his credit, kept getting up. The Brazilian nailed Weidman with a body kick in the fourth round, only to have the champion make a "Bring it on" gesture. Machida, knowing he needed something big, started coming forward and connecting. Both men showed damage from an electric, bruising round that had the crowd chanting "Machida." Weidmans rib cage looked like Machida had taken a baseball bat to it. The fifth round was equally brutal. Machida survived a head kick and the two tired fighters kept punching. A Weidman takedown was followed by a wild Machida flurry as the fight ended. Machida, his face ravaged by ugly red abrasions and bumps, held an ice pack on his head at the post-fight news conference. "Ill be back better," he said. It was Weidmans first outing since back-to-back wins over Anderson Silva. Weidmans basic purse was listed at US$225,000 with a matching win bonus, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Machida was on a basic $200,000 purse. The two also got an extra $50,000 each for fight of the night. Rouseys purse was listed at $60,000, with a matching win bonus, and she picked up another $50,000 for performance of the night. Davis was on $24,000, with a matching win bonus. The commission figures do not tell the whole story, however, since the UFC does not detail all the details of its fighter compensation. Rousey, with her fourth title defence, improved her record to 10-0 while Davis fell to 16-6. The champion finally smiled in the wake of her lopsided win, with the crowd cheering her on. It was a matchup of the only female fighters with 3-0 UFC records. A smiling Davis, who has black belts in Brazilian and Japanese jiu-jitsu, entered to "Royals" by Lorde. Husband Flavio Meier, a BJJ black belt who trains and corners her, wasnt far behind. A stone-faced Rousey, an Olympic bronze medallist in judo, followed to Joan Jetts "Bad Reputation." There was drama on the card backstage when Dutch heavyweight Stefan (Skyscraper) Struve, slated to make a comeback after a heart scare, fainted backstage and was scratched from his bout with Matt Mitrione. White said Struve passed out while warming up. When he came to, he had an elevated heart rate. White said doctors initially thought it might be a panic attack. "With his health and safety in mind, hes been removed from the card and is currently under the care of the medical staff," the UFC said in a statement. The six-foot-11 Struves MMA career appeared over last year when he was diagnosed with a rare heart condition. He was given the OK to resume fighting by his doctors in the Netherlands and the UFCs cardiologist. The night started with wins by five straight underdogs before veteran bantamweight Urijah (The California Kid) Faber stopped Alex (Bruce Leroy) Caceres via third-round submission in the featured undercard fight. Faber, a 35-year-old former WEC featherweight champion who has never lost a non-title fight, was a 10-1 favourite. Caceres, 26, had won four of his last five with another victory overturned due to a positive test for marijuana. Caceres length and unorthodox style was making life difficult for the five-foot-six Faber, who scored takedowns but failed to do much damage. But the veteran came out strong in the third, driving Caceres back across the cage with a flurry of blows and then grabbing a leg to tip him over. Caceres (10-6 with one no contest) gave up his back and Faber (31-7) finished him off by rear-naked choke at 1:09 of the third round. Faber, who thought he might have broken a rib in the first round, is ranked second among 135-pound contenders while Caceres is No. 12. Bantamweight Russell Doane (14-3) opened the pay-per-view portion of the card with a 29-28, 28-29, 30-27 split decision win over Marcus (The Bama Beat) Brimage (6-3). Middleweight Uriah (Prime Time) Hall survived a gruesome toe injury to win a 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 decision over Brazils Thiago Santos. Hall, who has been called out by White for not delivering on his skills in losing his first two UFC fights, showed his grit by fighting on with a broken toe from the first round. Halls toe was pointing up as the second round started. The doctor spoke to Hall after the second round but allowed the fight to continue. Every time the bent toe was shown on the big screens, the crowd groaned. Especially post-fight when a shot showed the bone protruding. "Any movement I would feel my bone shift in and out of the skin," said Hall. To add insult to injury, a limping Hall was kicked in the groin in the third round. Hall, who limped out of the ring holding onto a cornerman, received thunderous applause after the decision was announced in his favour. He later tweeted an X-ray of the busted toe. Earlier, middleweight Luke Zachrich (14-3) won a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 decision over Brazilian TUF alumnus Guilherme (Bomba) Vasconcelos (3-2). Middleweight (King) Kevin Casey (9-3) spoiled the Octagon debut of Bubba (The Fighting Texas Aggie) Bush (8-3), putting him down him with a left hook before finishing him off with a string of elbows on the ground for a 61-second TKO. Bantamweight Rob Font (11-1) enjoyed a spectacular debut, hammering George Roop with a right to the head that literally had the six-foot-one Roop (15-2-1) out on his feet. Roop buckled and then fell to the ground, with referee Chris Tognoni stepping in at 2:19 of the first round. Font, who spent some three years delivering pizzas, also got a $50,000 performance of the night bonus. Brazilian middleweight Bruno Santos (14-1), a five-foot-nine slab of muscle, evened his UFC record at 1-1 with a 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 split decision over Chris Camozzi (19-8). Welterweight Kenny Robertson (14-3) won a unanimous 30-26 decision over Brazilian Ildemar Alcantara (20-7). Nike Vapormax Saldi . -- Craig Anderson has quite a record against his former team, the Florida Panthers. You couldnt actually see any steam coming from Graham DeLaets ears, but figuratively speaking, its likely he was blowing like a tea kettle as he walked back around the large pond stuck in the middle of the seventh hole. DeLaet was making that trip after dunking his ball in the water and then getting a questionable ruling from an overzealous and possibly optically challenged rules official. He ended up making a double-bogey seven which seemed to derail his attempt to move up the leaderboard at the PGA Championship. But the Weyburn, Sask., native followed that up by making birdie on six of his next nine holes for a round of 68 to keep himself within striking distance of the lead. “It was a good day. I escaped the disaster that could have been,” he said. DeLaets round didnt get out to a great start. He made sloppy bogeys on the second and fifth holes before arriving at the seventh. After hitting a decent drive, he elected to go for the green with his second shot. The ball started left and sliced towards the green but came up short and in the water. Before it went for a plunge, it seemed to cross the hazard line on the far side of the water and DeLaet went to drop his ball about 60 yards from the green at the spot where he saw it cross. An official objected and a discussion ensued following which DeLaet started the long walk back around the pond to play his fourth shot. DeLaet took the high road and didnt say much about the situation but his tight expression indicated clearly he wasnt too happy. “Yeah, there was definitely a question about it,” he said, refusing to elaborate any further. However playing partner Steve Strricker offered up his view of the situation.dddddddddddd “Graham was going to drop and the official came running over and said no, no, no. There was no way he was going to let him play from that spot,” said the former Canadian Tour player. “At the end of the day, only Graham knows whether it crossed the line, but he did the right thing. You dont want to be known as the guy who took a [questionable] drop.” The long walk back took so long that the twosome behind – Phil Mickelson and Bernd Wiesberger – played their shots to the green before DeLaet did. After he finally put the ball in the cup, he put a seven down on the card. That might have been the end of his tournament, but he suddenly caught fire, making birdies on his next four holes. He added a couple more coming in and only a stubbed wedge on the final hole prevented him from closing with another one. Now he finds himself in a large pack of golfers chasing Rory McIlroy knowing that he still has an outside chance. “I think its going to be exciting,” he stated. “Im going to definitely have to get off to a better start, but I think if I can get three or four under through the first six or seven holes, anything can happen.  I think its going to take a low one tomorrow but I think its definitely a possibility.” DeLaet does have the ability to make birdies in bunches, as evidenced by yesterdays late flurry. So posting a 63 is not out of the question. When asked if he thought he could win the tournament, he replied positively. “It would be great to lift up that big trophy,” he said with a wide smile. The New Orleans made a big dip into the free agent pool on Tuesday. The team has signed three-time Pro Bowl free safety Jairus Byrd to a six-year contract worth a reported $54 million with $28 million being guaranteed. Drafted out of Oregon in 2009, Byrd has spent his entire five-year career with the Buffalo Bills. He the AFC in interceptions three times and has 22 career picks over his career. Last season, the Bills placed their franchise tag on Byrd and he agreed to a one-year, $6.9 million franchise tender in August. Despite this, reports surfaced over the course of last season that Byrd was seeking a move out of Buffalo. Byrd will slot into a Saints secondary next to Kenny Vaccaro and will replace Malcolm Jenkins, who signed a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier on Tuesday. Bryce Harper? He also came into Wednesday without a long ball and hadnt driven in a run. He was hitting .160, had nearly three times as many strikeouts as hits and was dropped to seventh in the batting order. They both got going in a hurry. Werth delivered a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning off Carlos Marmol after Harpers upper-deck, three-run homer started a comeback from an early deficit, and the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 10-7 Wednesday night. "Crazy game. Back and forth," said Werth, who violently tossed his bat after making contact on his homer. "One of those games where you play that long, you want to win." Helped by 3 1-3 innings from Craig Stammen after Jordan Zimmermann produced his shortest start in the majors, Washington overcame deficits of 5-0 and 7-6. Werths shot off Marmol (0-1) came with one out, after the reliever allowed a single, hit a batter, then intentionally walked Anthony Rendon to load the bases. "Knowing Jayson, if the pitcher looks at him wrong, hell take that personally," Stammen said. "So them blatantly walking to get to him -- typically they dont walk to get to your 3-hole hitter, especially a veteran guy thats proven he can get big hits. But they chose to, and it worked out in our favour this time." Explained Marlins manager Mike Redmond: "We were trying to win the ballgame there. We were trying to get a ground ball," hoping Werth might hit into a double play to end the inning. But Werth helped make a winner of Tyler Clippard (1-1), who yielded Garrett Jones tiebreaking RBI double in the top of the eighth after walking a pair of batters. Rafael Soriano, Washingtons sixth pitcher, worked the ninth for his second save. Jones hit put Miami ahead 7-6, but Giancarlo Stanton was thrown out at the plate on Rendons relay of Werths throw from right on the play. Werth then came through with his fourth career grand slam, and first with the Nationals. He drove an 0-1 pitch into the visitors bullpen in left-centre, then acknowledged the fans cheering with a curtain call.dddddddddddd "I was trying to go in and get a ground ball. Thats what Im trying to do," Marmol said. "The ball stayed a little in the middle and he hit it good." Werth was responsible for five RBIs Wednesday, including on a groundout in the fifth after Rendons triple to pull the hosts within 5-4. The comeback had started when Harper, the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year, had a successful 10-pitch at-bat -- including five consecutive fouls -- against left-hander Brad Hand in the fourth inning. Harper turned on a 94 mph offering and hit it over the foul pole and into the fifth row of the third deck beyond right field. That last pitch, Hand said, "kind of went down and in, right into his happy zone." Harpers homer trimmed what had been a five-run Marlins lead to 5-3. "Completely different down two, as opposed to down five," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "Thats a big swing for him, confidence-wise. Its a big swing for us." Zimmermann, who won 19 games last season, left after allowing five runs in 1 2-3 innings. Derek Dietrich was awarded a two-run homer after a replay review in the second inning, and Christian Yelich wound up with three hits and two walks. "Just wasnt crisp tonight with his command," Williams said about Zimmermann. But the Marlins allowed the Nationals to rally, helping the hosts by making three errors, raising Miamis total to 11 through nine games. Washington improved to 6-2, and it has trailed in four of those victories. "I never felt out of this game," Werth said, "thats for sure." NOTES: Zimmermanns previous shortest outing was two innings, on July 21, 2013, against the Dodgers. ... Washington 3B Ryan Zimmerman returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Saturday after sitting out with a sore throwing shoulder. ... Marlins RHP Arquimedes Caminero threw 1 2-3 hitless innings. He was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans before the game to replace RHP Jacob Turner, who went on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder. CARDIFF -- Wales cut loose after a first-half red card to Scotland fullback Stuart Hogg to cruise to a seven-try 51-3 win at Millennium Stadium, ending the deposed champions patchy Six Nations campaign in style on Saturday. George North and Jamie Roberts helped themselves to two tries each in a record Welsh victory over Scotland, which was never in doubt from the moment Hogg was sent off for a late hit on flyhalf Dan Biggar in the 23rd minute when the score was 10-3. Liam Williams and Taulupe Faletau added further scores to put Wales 39-3 ahead by the 48th minute before the Scots stemmed the tide, conceding just one more try to Rhodri Williams late on. Biggar kicked 14 points. Wales, which started out seeking to win an unprecedented third straight title outright, finished on six points -- with its three victories all coming at home -- and in third place in the standings. Scott Johnson, taking charge of his final match as Scotland coach before being replaced by Vern Cotter this summer, endured a miserable return to Wales -- the country with whom his international coaching career began 12 years ago. It was never going to be a winning end for Johnson from the time Hogg was dismissed, the British Lions tourist leading with his left shoulder and elbow to smash into the face of Biggar. It was a rash challenge, especially since Scotland was under no pressure and Biggar was kicking an up-and-under inside his own half. "I have let people down," Hogg said in a statement. "I have said sorry in person to Dan Biggar. I always try to play hard and fair and what happened today was out of character for me." French referee Jerome Garces initially gave a yellow card to Hogg but changed his mind after seeing a replay on the big screen inside Millennium Stadium. Garces trotted over to the touchline and brandished the red card, with Hogg already off the pitch and getting ready for 10 minutes in the sin-bin. The Welsh had a deserved lead at the time, thanks to fullback Liam Williams left-wing try and a conversion and penalty by Biggar, and were starting to assert their dominance. After that, it was a case of how big the margin of victory would be. Given how the match panned out, it wasnt the ideal platform to assess the performance of a new-look Wales team that featured six changes to the one that started the 29-18 loss to England last weekend. What was not in doubt, however, was the quality of the tries in what, by halftime, turned into an indoor party under the roof. Scores by North and Roberts in the final six minutes of the first half started from the halfway line and were both down the left channel, with debutant Scottish wing Dougie Fife hopelessly outnumbered. Norths second try, less than a minute after the interval, also came down the left as Jonathan Davies sent the hulking winger scampering along the touchline past the beleaguered Fife. The best try of the afternoon belonged to Roberts, who finished off a length-of-the-field move that had its origins from an overthrown lineout by Scotland near Wales line. Williams sprinted 50 metres and the ball went through the hands of Davies and Faletau before Roberts arrived late to crash over. With the score 39-3, the Welsh were already way past their previous biggest margin of victory over the Scots -- 24 points in a 46-22 win in Cardiff in 2005 -- and there was still 32 minutes left. However, the hosts crossed only once more to hit the half century. Scotland finished in fifth place with one win, against bottom-place Italy. Weston Richburg 49ers Jersey . Pospisil, the No. 28 seed, pulled out during a doubles match a day before his scheduled third-round singles match against Stanisials Wawrinka of Switzerland. Pospisil, 23, and Austrian partner Julien Knowle were losing 1-2 to an Australian duo in the first round of their match when he withdrew after being told by doctors he risked compromising his season if he continued. He will return to Vancouver on Friday to start rehab in hopes of playing in the Davis Cup in Tokyo in two weeks. Pospisil called it an unfortunate and disappointing injury. "Im really disappointed to be pulling out. Its my first third round in a Grand Slam. I was excited to do my best and take the opportunity, but unfortunately not able to do so at this time." "Its nothing too serious right now, but theres significant risk if I were to play on it that I could do some serious damage, Popisil added. "I dont want to jeopardize the rest of my season in any way. So it was just the smart move really to pull out, and be safe with my body and try and get reeady hopefully in time for Davis Cup.ddddddddddddquot; Pospisil first felt the problem in a semi-final against Wawrinka this month in Chennai, India and withdrew in the second set. He also withdrew from a tournament last week in Sydney. Pospisil bounced back on Wednesday, however, to earn a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (9), 6-1 victory over Australian Matthew Ebden. "Theres nothing thats really wrong with it (the back) right now," stressed Pospisil. "Its just more preventive, Im supposed to keep off it for a little while." Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., began his match in the evening after tournament officials had halted play on all courts except the covered ones due to a temperature of more than 43 C on the third day of a record heat wave. Raonic, 23, is into the Melbourne third round for a fourth consecutive year. No. 76 Hanescu had defeated Raonic in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto in 2010 but lost their next meeting in Chennai at the start of 2012. Raonic found himself in a fight early on with Hanescu as the pair each held onto serve in a set which eventually went into a tiebreak. The Canadian saved a Romanian set point but needed three of his own to earn the set after 56 minutes. In the second set, Raonic went up an early break and was in control when the weather moved in. He returned to take the set, stayed in command in the third and posted the victory in two hours, 19 minutes with 27 aces on his fourth match point. PHOENIX -- Nine days past his 26th birthday, Craig Kimbrel is the Atlanta Braves career leader in saves. That number figures to get a lot bigger before hes through. Kimbrel got the final four outs in the Braves 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night, earning his 16th save of the season (in 18 tries) and 155th of his career. Thats one more than John Smoltz. Those 155 saves have come in 172 opportunities. "Ive been a part of a lot of good teams and had a lot of opportunities," Kimbrel said. "Having the chance my first full season to be a closer, that doesnt happen very often and thats why were sitting here talking today, because I had that opportunity a lot of guys dont have. "I feel blessed and grateful for it." Kimbrel had one save in 2010, 46 in 2011, 42 in 2012 and 50 in 2013. "Ive played with him for four years and some change and hes already the franchise leader in saves," teammate Jason Heyward said. "Thats pretty cool." Hayward drove in three runs, two with a home run, and Andrelton Simmons doubled in a run for the Braves. Julio Teheran (6-3) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings to win his fourth straight decision. Didi Gregorius became the first Diamondback to hit leadoff home runs in consecutive starts. He did it Wednesday in Colorado, sat out Thursdays game, then did it again Friday. Arizonas Brandon McCarthy (1-8) allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out nine and walking one. McCarthy singled in the tying run in the fifth, his first career RBI. Kimbrel entered the game with two outs and a runner at first in the eighth inning and got his former Atlanta teammate Martin Prado looking to end the inning. With a three-run lead in the ninth, Kimbrel got Aaron Hill and David Peralta to fly out, then Tuffy Gosewich popped out to end it. It was just his third career four-out save. "He hadnt pitched since last Saturday," manager Fredi Gonzalez said, "so we were able to do that." The Braves broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when, with one out, Heyward drew the only walk McCarthy allowed. Simmons lashed a double to the corner in left, scoring Heyward from first. The Atlanta leadoff hitter used his long arms to connect with a ball that was high and outside and drove it to the opposite field. "It was a pitch I dont expect to get hit at all," McCarthy said. "It was right where I wanted it. It was a hard four-seamer up and away and I wanted to use it to establish something else. He took a good swing at it and hit a home run. I was pretty surprised." They added another run in the ninth on Heywards RBI single. Right fielder Gerardo Parra robbed Simmons of an extra-base hit and probably saved a run with a diving grab in the ninth. Atlanta took the lead in the fifth when Jordan Schafer doubled over third base to start the inning. He scored on Heywards home run to left that made it 2-1. Gregorius, called up from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, opened the game with a shot just over the fence in right. Teheran didnt allow another hit until Peralta, another recent arrival from the minors, led off the fifth with a ground-rule double. Teheran retired the next two batters, but McCarthy -- 2 for 23 for the season to that point -- slapped a single between shortstop and third to bring Peralta home and tie it 2-2. Ex-Diamondback Justin Upton, greeted with a mix of boos and cheers, struck out three times against McCarthy, then flied out to the fence in right and drove in a run with a bloop single in the ninth. NOTES: In the second day of the amateur draft, Arizona chose OF Matt Railey of North Florida Christian Academy. Hes committed to Florida State. ... Braves RHP Jordan Walden, recovering from a strained left hamstring, began a rehab assignment Thursday night for Triple-A Gwinnett against Columbus, facing four batters in two-thirds inning, giving up a run and two hits. He struck out the first three batters, but the third reached on a wild pitch. The next batter homered. ... James McCleans second-half winner helped Ireland move top of their World Cup qualification group, having picked up 10 points in their opening four games.Irelands first ever taste of victory in Austria has put them in a strong position to qualify for Russia in 2018, but ONeill admitted it will be a close-fought race. Naturally its a big win because we have defied the odds here this evening. Weve won a game here in Austria, ONeill told Sky Sports after the match.Ive just been told its 53 years since we last won. I dont think thats really important - its about whats happening now and its three great points for us. James McCleans goal sends the Republic of Ireland top of their World Cup qualifying group Its a really great start but I know from our experience in the Euro [2016] campaign, when matches were difficult and wed lost our fourth game against Scotland - it seemed a long way away but we had to come back.We drew with Poland and Scotland but we always felt like we were in it, and thats the same here, even though we have an extra couple of points on the board, I still believe it will be very tight. McClean celebrates after scoring against Austria Having crashed out of their Euro 2016 group in summer, Austrias year ended with greater disappointment as Ireland upset Marcel Kollers side on Saturday night.ddddddddddddBut it was a resolute performance from Ireland, while Austria were abject in front of goal, and the victory was richly deserved despite a nervy start. We had to withstand a lot of early pressure from Austria and we gradually got into the game, but it took us a while to do so, ONeill added. Highlights of the Republic of Irelands World Cup qualifier against Austria [Jonathan] Walters chance at the end of the first half gave us that spirit to go on, and then we were very strong. Its too easy to say theres a great spirit about the team. We have a good strength of character which is very important and is epitomised by players like McClean. Hes done brilliantly for us tonight.Walters hasnt played all that often for Stoke, but he was brilliant tonight, I could go through the whole team. We have something there which is very strong within the group. MIAMI -- LeBron James is dealing with a few aches and pains, which obviously is not the best news for the Miami Heat with two weeks left in the regular season. Come game time, though, nothing seems to be ailing him. Bringing the crowd out of its seats with a pair of highlight-reel dunks in the first half, then drilling a deep 3-pointer to end the third quarter, James was his typical effective self on Wednesday night. He led Miami with 17 points, and the Heat stayed atop the Eastern Conference with a wire-to-wire 96-77 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. "If I feel like I can give something, Ive got to be out there for my teammates," James said. "Its my obligation to be out there for them. Im dealing with a few things, but for me to sit out, I have to be dealing with a lot more." Chris Bosh scored 15 and Mario Chalmers scored 14 for the Heat. "I like our effort," Bosh said. "We just have to take care of business and do what were supposed to do." Ramon Sessions scored 19 points for Milwaukee, which got 14 from Jeff Adrien, 11 from Brandon Knight and 10 from John Henson. Zaza Pachulia grabbed 16 rebounds in 26 minutes for the NBA-worst Bucks, who have now had 11 games this season in which they never led. "Getting down against a team like that is definitely tough because they continue to play hard," Knight said. "They dont let up and they dont make many mistakes. ... Credit to them but we didnt execute defensively and we didnt play hard enough." The Bucks fell to 14-61 with seven games remaining and are now only one loss away from tying the franchise record for most defeats in a season. "As we wind this thing down with seven games to go, the thing I want is see them compete," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "Were dealing with adverse times. This is really a good time to see what guys are truly made of." James said he doesnt currently plan on sitting out any of Miamis final eight games, and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said he probably wouldnt even think about any strategy to get him some rest for at least another week -- a stance that cant come as a surprise, considering the East No. 1 seed is hardly secure. With the win, Miami (52-22, .703) remained percentage points ahead of Indiana (53-23, .697) in the East race. The Pacers beat Detroit 101-94 earlier Wednesday. "Its tempting to start to look ahead. Were only two weeks away," Spoelstra said. "But theres so much basketball left in these two weeks. And it is very compelling at this time of year, and we are trying to accomplish some things. So as guys start to get back into the lineup we want to take a step forward as a group. And theres a process to that." At some point, that process will presumably include getting Dwyane Wade, Ray Allen and Greg Oden back into the lineup. Wade missed his 23rd game of the season, his fourth straight with a hamstring problem. The Heat are 11-1 in the last 12 games that Wade has missed. Allen has been sidelined by a flu bug that struck his entire family, though hes nearing a return. Oden has been sidelined by back spasms, with Spoelstra saying hes also close to getting back. "Were sharpening our swords," Spoelstra said. Milwaukee opened the fourth quarter with six straight points, cutting Miamis lead to 14 and getting the Heat to call time-out. Whatever doubt existed at that point, if any, didnt last long. Norris Cole snapped Miamis scoreless drought with a beat-the-shot-clock 3-pointer as he was leaning to his right with 8:35 left, Rashard Lewis swished another 3 on the next Heat possession to restore the 20-point cushion, and that basically ensured James would remain in his warmups for the rest of the evening. NOTES: The Bucks led the Heat for a total of 2 minutes, 21 seconds this season -- in three games. ... Miamis Udonis Haslem earned a technical late in the half after a bit too much physicality with Adrien under the basket. Haslem also got his 1,500th career offensive rebound. ... The Heat moved to 30-6 at home, the seventh time in franchise history theyve won that many in Miami. ... Milwaukees O.J. Mayo missed the game with an ankle injury. Buy Air Max 270 . CSNPhilly.com reports that the 26-year-old wide receiver will sign a four-year deal with the team on Thursday. Cooper had a career year in 2013, stepping up in the absence of Jeremy Maclin and developing quick chemistry with quarterback Nick Foles. The 2010 fifth-round draft pick out of Clearwater Central Catholic finished the year with 47 receptions for 835 yards and eight touchdowns. He was tied for third in the league in most yards per catch with 17.8. The season didnt start well for Cooper.ddddddddddddA slow start on the field was compounded by a preseason incident in which Cooper was caught on camera making racial slurs at a concert. He was fined by the team and left the club for a period to seek counseling. Financial details of Coopers new deal have not been disclosed. The re-signing of Cooper could be followed shortly after by the re-signing of Maclin.
